Let’s be honest. Packing is one of those jobs that always looks easy until you actually start doing it. You pack one box, then realise it’s too heavy to lift. You seal another one, only to remember you forgot to put something inside. And somehow, the tape always disappears when you need it most.
That’s exactly why having a few basic packing essentials ready before you start makes such a difference. It saves time, keeps your belongings safer and makes the whole job feel far less chaotic.
You don’t need to buy everything on the shelf either. A few good-quality items are usually more than enough.
Here’s what I’d never pack without:
- Strong boxes in different sizes
- Protective wrapping for delicate items
- Reliable packing tape
- Labels or a marker pen
- A box cutter for unpacking
One thing I’ve learned is that using the right box matters more than people think. Trying to squeeze everything into one huge box usually ends with a sore back. Smaller boxes are much easier for heavy things like books, while larger ones work better for lighter belongings.
If you’re posting products instead of moving house, postal boxes are a much better option because they’re made to handle the journey.
Fragile items deserve a bit of extra attention too. We’ve all opened a box and hoped nothing inside had broken. Spending a few extra minutes wrapping glassware, ceramics, or electronics is always worth it.
For smaller products, bubble mailers can save you both time and effort. They’re already padded, so you don’t have to keep adding layer after layer of protection.
Another mistake loads of people make is leaving empty gaps inside the box. It might not seem like a big deal, but once that box starts moving around in a van, everything inside moves too. Filling those spaces helps keep your belongings exactly where they should be.
Before you seal everything up, make sure you’ve got decent packaging supplies. Cheap tape has a habit of peeling off at the worst possible moment, and nobody wants to be re-taping boxes halfway through moving day.
If you’ve got items that scratch easily, wrapping them in parcel wrap first can make a real difference. It’s a small step, but it helps keep everything looking the way it should. And don’t skip the labels. You might think you’ll remember which box has the kettle or the phone charger, but trust me, after twenty boxes, they all look the same.
Flat items like documents, certificates or prints fit much better in envelope boxes, so there’s no need to force them into oversized cartons.
Packing isn’t exactly anyone’s favourite job, but it does get easier when you’ve got the right materials sitting beside you. A little preparation at the start means far less stress when it’s finally time to unpack.
