# 10 Museum Interactive Installation Designs and What Makes Them Work

Walk past a display case and the object stays still. Step into a room that registers where you stand and rearranges itself around you, and you stop reading about a subject and start moving through it. A museum interactive installation exists to produce that shift, and it rests on design judgement far more than on hardware.

## 1. A projected forest that sets its own pace

teamLab’s Story of the Forest filled the Glass Rotunda at the National Museum of Singapore from 2016 to 2024. Visitors walked down a 170 metre spiral while animated plants and animals from the museum’s William Farquhar watercolours moved with them, and pausing near the wall made the forest grow. Architecture, not a screen, set the viewing time.

## 2. A wall that shows what is on view right now

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s [ArtLens Wall](https://www.clevelandart.org/artlens-gallery/artlens-wall) is a 40 foot multitouch display carrying every artwork currently on view, regrouped every 40 seconds. Visitors browse, dock a phone, save what interests them, then go and find the real thing. Its job is **orientation**: the interaction resolves in the galleries, not at the glass.

## 3. Rooms where the body is the interface

Deep Space 8K at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz projects onto a 16 by 9 metre wall and a floor of the same size, with ankle height laser sensors tracking up to 30 people. Visitors walk into the image. Because people stand inside the frame, compositions must allow for bodies, shadows and low sightlines.

## 4. A pen instead of an app

Cooper Hewitt gave every visitor a stylus that read chips in object labels, drew on large touch tables, and saved the results to a web address printed on the ticket. Accessibility can drive a whole design. Rio de Janeiro’s Museum of Tomorrow, whose exhibition was developed with Ralph Appelbaum Associates, tells its Anthropocene section through six ten metre digital totems carrying current climate and population data. No artefact anchors the room, so the design supplies what objects usually do: scale, verticality, a route that makes people look up.

## 9. A headset used for one thing only

The Louvre’s first virtual reality piece, Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass, ran during the 2019 Leonardo da Vinci retrospective: seven minutes, eleven stations, built on infrared and X-ray conservation research. It answered a defined problem, since crowds leave most visitors seconds with the painting. Brevity also keeps queueing and staffing manageable.

## 10. Galleries that collect what visitors make

Cleveland reopened its interactive gallery in July 2026 with 21 experiences, among them a community mural that lets visitors remix collection works and Infinite Landscape, which uses AI to generate scenery on a curved wall. ## How should museums plan an interactive installation?

Begin with the interpretive gap, then the audience, then the room. Technology comes last, and costs less for having waited.

### Decisions to settle before procurement

– **Objective:** what a visitor should understand, feel or question afterwards.
– **Audience:** school groups, families and specialists behave differently at one screen.
– **Dwell time:** 90 seconds and eight minutes need different placement.
– **Space and throughput:** capacity, queue length, seating, circulation.
– **Content ownership:** who updates the material, in what format, how often.
– **Support model:** who restarts it on a Tuesday morning, and how fast.
– **Privacy:** what sensors capture, how long it is kept, what visitors are told.
– **Measurement:** dwell time, completion, repeat use and observation, agreed before launch.
