UPPSC PCS Prelims Preparation Guide: Syllabus, Strategy and Key Tips for Aspirants

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) Provincial Civil Services (PCS) examination remains one of the most competitive state civil services exams in North India. The Preliminary Examination is scheduled for December 6, giving candidates roughly five to six months to prepare.

UPPSC PCS recruits for Group-A and Group-B gazetted posts including SDM, DSP, Block Development Officer (BDO), ACTO, and CDPO. The Prelims has two objective papers — GS Paper I (150 questions, 200 marks) and GS Paper II or CSAT (100 questions, 200 marks). CSAT is qualifying only (33% minimum); merit is based solely on GS Paper I. Negative marking of one-third applies.

The UPPSC PCS syllabus heavily covers Uttar Pradesh-specific topics — UP history, geography, rivers, culture, economy, and schemes like the UP Global Investors Summit. Students who skip UP GK often fall short even with strong general preparation.

Best strategy for 2027–2028 cycle aspirants: Phase 1 — build NCERT and standard books foundation (Laxmikanth, Spectrum, GC Leong). Phase 2 — shift to PYQ solving and UP-specific GK revision at least 3 months before Prelims. Solve 10+ years of UPPSC PYQs to identify recurring topics and difficulty patterns.
